Preparing for Your New Website: Part III – Content

Before work begins on your website, it is important to do some pre-work to help make the design / development process more effective and efficient.  After documenting your goals and identifying your technical considerations, the next step in the process is to organize the content to be used in your website.

Current Content Inventory
If your business has been around for a while, starting a new website can be like moving from one house to another.  It’s a great time to take inventory on what you have and decide what to keep and what to ditch.  You may have plenty of content that’s been already produced that can be reused for the website.

  1. Does your company have established branding / identity standards in place?
  2. Do you have existing marketing materials (i.e. brochures, flyers, sales / marketing folders)?  Can the copy from these materials be reused on the website for consistency in message?
  3. Do you have (or need) custom photography?  If not, are stock photos an option?
  4. If you need custom photography, do you need us to provide a photographer?
  5. Would you like to utilize any multimedia features on the site? (Animations, product demos, video, audio)?   Are these features already produced?
  6. Do you have copy already written for the content needed on your website?  If not, will you be writing the copy yourself, or seeking copywriting services?

Content Organization
Once you’ve taken inventory of your current content, you can start the process of organizing it into an outline form for your websites.  Take some time to do some research on the type of sections you should have for your website (Example: Home, Services, Locations, FAQs, Employment, About Us, Contact Us).

Once you have your top-level sections, you can simply start building an outline of content, including any necessary sub-sections, by organizing your content inventory (and identifying new content needs) to fill in your outline.

Once these steps are complete, you will be well on your way to a great start to a new website.
